🌿 HICAP: Cultivating Lebanon’s Green Future with Industrial Hemp

As Lebanon stands at a pivotal moment in its economic and environmental history, a powerful seed of opportunity is being planted — and it’s called HICAP: the Hemp Innovation and Cultivation Advancement Project.

This strategic initiative is more than just an agricultural project. It’s a nationwide transformation strategy aimed at leveraging Lebanon’s natural assets, legal reforms, and market potential to become a regional hub for industrial hemp innovation.

🌍 Why Hemp, Why Now?

Lebanon faces critical challenges: economic decline, rural unemployment, environmental degradation, and overreliance on outdated crops. Yet, in the midst of these crises, hemp emerges as a powerful solution.

Backed by Lebanon’s 2020 Cannabis Legalization Law, industrial hemp offers a sustainable alternative to traditional crops — one that requires less water, rejuvenates soil, and powers multiple industries.

From hempcrete for green construction, to textiles, CBD oil, biofuels, and bioplastics, hemp has the power to create over 15,000 jobs and generate $125 million in annual revenue. And Lebanon’s strategic location offers easy access to European, Gulf, and African markets.

🚀 What is HICAP?

HICAP is a 4-phase roadmap to build a fully functioning industrial hemp sector in Lebanon. It includes:

  1. Research & Feasibility (6–12 months)

    • Site mapping, seed studies, and climate suitability analyses.

    • Key partners: Lebanese universities and international seed banks.

  2. Pilot Cultivation (12–18 months)

    • Initial farming on 500–1,000 hectares in Bekaa, North & South Lebanon.

    • Farmers receive training and financial incentives to switch crops.

  3. Processing & Market Launch (18–24 months)

    • Construction of hemp processing centers.

    • Launch of hemp-based products like hempcrete blocks, CBD extracts, and sustainable textiles.

  4. Full Commercialization (24–36 months)

    • 10,000 hectares under cultivation.

    • Full-scale exports to Europe and the Gulf.

    • 15,000+ direct and indirect jobs created.

🏗️ Strategic Sectors & Seed Selection

HICAP isn’t a one-size-fits-all plan. Different seed varieties have been scientifically selected for targeted applications:

  • Construction (Hempcrete)Futura 75

    • High hurd content ideal for green buildings.

  • TextilesSanthica 27

    • Long bast fibers for fabrics and ropes.

  • CBD OilCarmagnola

    • High-CBD, low-THC strain for pharmaceuticals.

  • BiofuelsUso-31

    • High oil yield for sustainable energy.

  • Bioplastics & PaperKompolti

    • Strong fibers for biodegradable packaging.

🌱 Environmental Regeneration

Hemp is one of the most eco-efficient crops on the planet:

  • Absorbs up to 1.63 tons of CO₂ per hectare annually.

  • Uses 30–50% less water than cotton or tobacco.

  • Revives degraded land through deep root systems and soil detoxification.

🤝 Social Impact: Empowering Lebanon’s Farmers

HICAP will revitalize Lebanon’s agricultural identity, especially in rural and marginalized communities. Farmers can earn 30–50% more per hectare than with traditional crops, while cooperatives and women-led initiatives will gain new opportunities.

Through partnerships with universities and NGOs, HICAP will also deliver education, training, and hands-on technology transfer to ensure long-term sustainability.

📢 A National Call to Action

HICAP isn’t just a project — it’s a national movement.

  • To Investors: The global hemp market is booming. Lebanon offers low-cost production and high-value exports. HICAP is a rare chance to join a first-mover opportunity in a newly legalized sector.

  • To Government Leaders: Support is needed to streamline licensing, invest in infrastructure, and negotiate export deals. The legal framework is in place — now it’s time to act.

  • To the People of Lebanon: Industrial hemp is not a drug. It’s a super crop that can heal our soil, fuel our economy, and restore pride in Lebanese agriculture.

🌿 The Future is Green — And It Starts Now

With the right investment and support, HICAP will turn Lebanon into a regional champion of sustainable agriculture, green innovation, and rural revitalization. Let’s grow a future where Lebanon’s farmers lead a new era of prosperity — rooted in sustainability.
